CSV to VCard – VCF Writer

My friend asked me to help him import all his mobile contacts from an old Nokia E50 to his all time favorite Motorola V8. I vaguely said “Google man u ll get something to import” . It did not take long for me to realize that he had done his homework and this is an Assignment for me….

Later I spent hours googling for a solution but nothing worked. How do we do it…? That was the time I cursed all mobile companies saying “Why can’t there be a standard format? why should they follow their own format..?”… But since cursing does not solve the problem at hand, I had to wear my coding hat and start some real stuff.

First thing I found out was VCF is a text file with a standard specification, which is widely accepted. Check this wikipedia link for more info.

I had to read the CSV file generated from his Nokia E50 (Of course with the the help of Nokia PC Suite) and convert all contacts to vCard files so that it can be imported as a contact in Motorola V8.

The tool works for a specific CSV header; I have included the header also along with the tool for your reference.

So if you ever had a trouble importing Contacts from Nokia phone to another brand, this application probably should shove it right away.

Hi there… i am back with a new application again. This time I have a desktop client for sending SMS through way2sms.com. All I wanted is a fast and tiny desktop application which can send SMS on the fly.

Real Time Data Feeder For AmiBroker

Here is a small application that can feed realtime BSE data to AmiBroker. I was looking for a tool that can download RT data from net and feed to AmiBroker. But none could satisfy my need. So I built one for myself. I am giving away the first Beta Version of FeedAB which downloads BSE data from www.money.rediff.com and feeds to Amibroker for further analysis.

There are few known bugs as of now, which I couldn’t fix due to time constraints. But the application works fine for normal use.

RegEx Matcher on Codeplex – Opensource Tool

Software engineers often deal with Regular Expressions for string validation or pattern matching. Composing a regular expression that matches exactly what is required and does not match what is not required is quite a tricky job. I created a tool that can help in this endeavor.

Send Gmail through GLook

Ever fed-up with logging in to gmail account and sending mail…? Ever thought it would have been better if Gmail had an offline client thtough which I can send mails in a giffy…? Then here it is…. With GLook 1.0 Beta you can do exactly the same.

To send mails fill in Display name, username (excluding @gmail.com), password, Subject and message body. You can enter as many email-ids as you want in To, CC and Bcc separated with Semicolons (;). You can leave CC and Bcc as blank. You can attach as many files as you want but size of files and number of files that can be delivered depends on gmail server.

This application uses Gmail.com’s SMTP server for sending mails and full credit goes to gmail.com for the same.

Real-Time NSE Equity Data Leacher

Since a long time I wanted to make an appliction that can fetch real time Equity share prices from web and store it on the local computer for further analysis. Now I took some time to implement the same and am posting the first beta version.  I named the application as QuoteLeacher as it leaches share prices from a given source.

As of now it downloads the data from www.nseindia.com; but in the future I’m planning to add other sources such as Yahoo Finance.

Following are the salient features of the application:

• Connects to www.nseindia.com and fetches equity market details for the companies you specify
• You can add as many companies as you want
• Can refresh data automatically @ a specified interval either in Minutes or Seconds
• Can write the data fetched into CSV files. The CSV file will automatically be stored in a folder with the particular date and the file name of the CSV will be in the format “mm-dd-yy hhmmss”
• “Proxy settings” in the Settings dialog box has two options

  o If you connect to internet directly, Select Automatically detect settings

  o If you connect to internet through a proxy server, select Use Proxy server and provide the proxy settings. If you do not have a user name, password and domain, leave them blank.

The application is developed on .net Platform 2.0 and you will need to download and install .net Framework 2.0 from Microsoft

Affinity Diagrams With Microsoft StickySorter…

Normally in a brainstorming session we generate a large chunk of ideas. But keeping all related ideas in a group and organizing them is a big problem. Two Microsoft employees created a spare-time project which is sponsored by Office Labs. The idea came from the need for project teams organizing ideas in a process known as Affinity Diagramming.

Protect your Password and User Names…!

Most of you know that it is unsafe to access your online bank accounts or do online shopping with your credit card in cyber cafes or such places. That is because a small software called keylogger running the computer can record all your keystrokes and even send it to the person who has installed through e-mail. System-wide Spell Check…! I am not joking…!

A couple of days back I came across this nice utility. I could not keep quiet without sharing this information and hence I wrote an article for my friend’s blog. Check my original post Here.

Probably MS Word has saved you a countless times from making silly spelling mistakes. Don’t you think life would have been easier if there was a software which would provide system-wide spell check facility? Luckily there is a software available to do it! “Enso Words” a 12.3MB freeware utility comes to your rescue.

Even though it seems quite cumbersome to get used to the software in the beginning, it is pretty good its work. Once you get used to its interface, it will become one of your favorite applications.

By default ‘Enso Words’ gets activated whenever you press Caps Lock. You can change it to other keys such as Windows key or Control key with the help of “Enso Preferences” which you can reach by right clicking on the Enso Words icon in system tray. Once you are done with this, you can start your journey with Enso Word.

By holding down the Caps Lock (or any other key which you have set just now), you can activate Enso Words. Once it is activated, you can give a set of commands to get your work done. You can achieve common tasks such as spell-check, Word-Count, Character-Count, Convert a set of words to upper case and so on. You can get list of commands it supports by issuing the ‘command list’ command.
To perform a spell-check select a set words from any of your applications such as MS Word or Google talk, hold down left Caps Lock key and press ‘s’ key. A set of commands appear as dropdown list. You can select any of the commands with the help of up or down arrow keys. For spell-check, Caps Lock key + s will launch a new window with the selected text. Click on the words highlighted with yellow color and select the proper word form the dropdown list. Once you are done with all the corrections, again hold down Caps Lock key and select ‘done’ command. Voila..! All the spelling mistakes in your application are gone now.
So now on you can just avoid all possible spelling mistakes with this tiny utility for free. Go get a copy for yourself today.
